Herniated Disc Treatment

Herniated Disc

A herniated disc is basically when the gel-like pad between the bones of the spine starts to tear and spread. It then fails to cushion vertebrae correctly and can result in either nerve pain or muscle pain. Most people think of back pain when they think of herniated discs, but there are a wide range of symptoms that can come from this condition.

Common Herniated Disc Symptoms

Pain from herniated discs is generally divided into two categories: nerve pain and soft tissue pain. Nerve pain is caused by compression of the spinal cord or nerves branching off from it. Soft tissue pain results from stress that is placed on the area around the herniated disc. This often results from a misalignment of the spine due to the disc not functioning as it is supposed to.

If the herniated disc is in the neck, pain is most often felt in the neck, arms and shoulders. Herniated discs in the lower back usually result in back, buttock and leg pain. The pain from a herniated disc is often described as "shooting" pain, as opposed to aching or dull pain.

The most common symptoms of herniated discs are:

  • Pain that may worsen when you move, cough, or sneeze
  • Numbness or tingling in certain parts of the body
  • Weakness, with or without any other symptoms

If you have back pain that travels down your arms or legs, or if you have weakness or numbness and back pain, see your doctor right away. As a licensed chiropractor, Dr. Eulo can help diagnose your condition and formulate a plan to get you better.
