Bulging Disc

How Chiropractic Care Can Help a Bulging Disc

Any neck or back injury can cause a person to feel pain and discomfort in everyday movements. A bulging disc injury is no different, and can even cause numbness, tingling, and instability. Luckily, this injury is commonly treated by our chiropractor at Eulo Chiropractic Center. A chiropractor is a safe, non-invasive way to treat a bulging disc. Below, let's learn more about this injury and how a chiropractor can help.

What is a bulging disc?

The spine is made up of several small, connected bones called vertebra. In between each of these bones is a tiny, gel-filled object called a disc. The disc works as a cushioning device to absorb the impact of everyday movements. It is is donut shaped and filled with a type of water-based jelly. Sometimes the outside wall of the disc can become cracked or ruptured, causing some cushioning gel to escape. When this happens, the disc is said to be herniated or bulging. Typically, a bulging disc injury occurs as people age and the disc walls become thin and brittle. Occasionally though, the disc wall can be ruptured as a result of a blunt force trauma injury.

What are the symptoms of a bulging disc?

Symptoms will vary between people depending on the location and severity of the bulging disc injury. Pain is typically associated with this injury and can range from a dull ache to a sharp and stabbing pain. If the disc is ruptured in the upper back or neck, symptoms are commonly felt in the shoulders, arms, and hands. A mild tingling or numbness is quite common in people with a herniated disc. Alternatively, if the disc is ruptured in the lower back, the numbness and tingling are most often felt in the buttocks, legs, and feet.

How can a chiropractor help?

A chiropractor works with each individual patient to find a custom treatment plan to help relieve pain and the associated symptoms with a bulging disc. Using a variety of techniques including manual manipulation, stretching and strengthening exercises, and physical therapy, a chiropractor works to restore balance to the body. This is done by aligning the spine correctly to relieve undue pressure to the soft tissues of the spine, including the discs. By relieving pressure, the disc is free to heal correctly and naturally.
